Luke Barnard Awarded Scholarship

Congrats to Luke Barnard!

The Greater Lee’s Summit Healthcare Foundation is celebrating the 2017 scholarship awards given to 11 local health-focused students, who included Luke Barnard. He is an awardee of a $3,000 GLSHF scholarship.

Luke shares his story: "I lived in the same house in the Bent Tree Bluffs neighborhood of Lee's Summit for the entirety of the first 18 years of my life, and my parents still live there to this day. After graduating from Lee's Summit North High School, I attended the University of Kansas where I eventually graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry with a focus in Biochemistry after an ill-conceived decision to start college as a math major. After graduation, I taught English in a small city in the Hubei province of China using my free time to travel around the country pressing my luck with my inability to speak Mandarin. Upon return to the States, I started work as a technician for Dr. Keith Warren, a retinologist in Overland Park. Working for Dr. Warren not only strengthened my interest in medicine, but also fostered my interest in the field of ophthalmology. This last December, I went to Barcelona to fulfill my dream of watching Messi play at the Camp Nou. Oh, and as a side note, I proposed to my fiancee Hailey Baker while in Spain. This scholarship is helping me to avoid the deep abyss that are student loans, and I appreciate the support of the GLSHF for my pursuit of a medical degree and a residency in the field of ophthalmology. I hope to use the support of the GLSHF to pursue further international experiences throughout medical school with the hopes to practice medicine in international communities as an ophthalmologist later in my career."
