Scholarship Helps Doctor

Kyle Riggs was born with Tetralogy of Fallot, a complex heart defect. He has undergone two open-heart surgeries to correct the defect and is in his last semester of medical school at the University of Missouri.

Riggs, a 2008 graduate of Lee’s Summit North High School, chose the healthcare field after meeting the two surgeons who operated on him. He said their work left an impression, so much so that he aspires to be a congenital cardiothoracic surgeon.

Riggs, 26, plans to operate primarily on children and occasionally adults who were born with heart defects. He knows from his experiences that many are long, technically challenging surgeries.
